“We Say Gay: State Censorship and Florida Queer Narrative for Kids”
Date: 19 November 2024
Time: 13.10-15.00
Venue: A313
Guest Speaker: Prof. Kenneth Kidd, Department of English, University of Florida
Prof. Kenneth Kidd, from the Department of English at the University of Florida, works in Anglophone children’s literature studies and is especially interested in the field’s intersections with other cultural fields, such as philosophy, psychology, and critical theory. He is invited as the keynote speaker for the 2024 international conference in Taiwan, “Kids and Adults Allowed: Children’s Literature for Everyone,” organized by Soochow University and Taiwan Children’s Literature Research Association (TCLRA).
Prof. Kidd has authored books like Theory for Beginners: Children’s Literature as Critical Thought (Fordham, 2020), Freud in Oz (Minnesota, 2011) and Making American Boys (Minnesota, 2004). His most recent co-edited book is Alt Kid Lit: What Children's Literature might Be (2024).
In this lecture at Wenzao, Prof. Kidd will share his profound knowledge of queer narratives and discourse in children’s literature, a field in which he has been a pioneering scholar. He will combine this expertise with his keen, long-term observation of the specific context of Florida and demonstrate how censorship is enacted yet how queer narrative and discourse can still flourish in the pursuit of liberty and equality.
