Strengthening Global Ties: Two Students from the Department of English Represent Wenzao and Taiwan at Meisei University’s 2026 MSSP

The partnership between Meisei University, Japan, and Wenzao’s Department of English, resumed during former Chair Dr. Liying Wu’s 2025 sabbatical, continues to thrive. This summer, two students from the English Department, Angelica and Reggey (from XE5C), traveled to Japan to participate in Meisei University Summer Program (MSSP) from July 10 to August 9.

MSSP, led by Prof. Takanori Kawamata, program coordinator in Department of International Studies, School of Humanities, pairs international participants with local Japanese students to co-design and implement English teaching plans for local elementary and junior high schools. During the first three weeks, participants engaged in hands-on coursework and group projects, followed by a final week of in-class teaching practice. After school, students in the international residence hall shared their cultures by taking turns cooking traditional meals and telling stories about their hometowns.

Meisei University generously supported selected participants with full tuition waivers and provided accommodation, making overseas study remarkably accessible. The English Department’s participation was made possible through the direct efforts of Prof. Kawamata, who secured two dedicated spots for Wenzao representatives following his visit to Kaohsiung in March 2025. The Department of English also extends its sincere thanks to former student representative Diego, whose outstanding performance in 2025 reaffirmed Prof. Kawamata’s support.

As cultural ambassadors for Wenzao and Taiwan, Angelica and Reggey thrived in the immersive environment—practicing multilingual communication, making new connections, and gaining invaluable teaching experience. Reggey stated, “The program taught me how to interact and work with people from different backgrounds beyond the classroom, and it also confirmed my desire to continue pursuing opportunities related to languages and international exchange in the future.” Angelica shared, “Although the exchange lasted only one month, it was filled with precious memories and meaningful friendships across borders, making it a truly valuable and memorable learning experience.” Through this intensive program, both students gained a deeper appreciation of the importance of language as a means of communication and collaboration and a way to build connections with others.

The Department of English sincerely thanks Meisei University and Prof. Kawamata for their continued dedication to broadening students’ perspectives and advancing this valuable inter-university and departmental partnership.
